What is PCOS: 

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women, often leading to irregular menstrual cycles, excess hair growth, acne, and weight gain.

It occurs when the ovaries produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones), which can interfere with the development and release of eggs. This condition can also make it harder to get pregnant and may increase the risk of developing other health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Why it is common amongst Black Women:

PCOS is particularly prevalent among Black women, who are more likely to experience severe symptoms, including insulin resistance, weight gain, and increased risk of diabetes.

Factors like genetics, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare may contribute to this higher prevalence and impact. Additionally, Black women with PCOS often face delays in diagnosis and treatment.
